The Architect of Attendance Scienceā¢: How Dr. Carolyn Gentle-Genitty Built a New Field
For more than a century, schools answered absence with enforcement. Letters, fines, and court referrals treated the empty seat as the problem. Dr. Carolyn Gentle-Genitty, founder and CEO of Attendance USA, asked a different question: what makes a child show up? Her answer became a new field, Attendance Science™, the science of showing up.
A field earns the name science when its work is systematic, testable, falsifiable, and self-correcting. Dr. Gentle-Genitty built Attendance Science to meet that standard through five components:
- A theory: Hirschi’s social bond theory, which explains why students who feel bonded to school show up.
- An instrument: the PSSB©, the Perception of School Social Bonding scale, a 10-item measure on APA PsycTests since 2009 and validated with 3,507 students.
- A taxonomy: four classifications of absence, truancy, school withdrawal, school avoidance, and school refusal.
- A framework: PRESENCE™, which structures analysis from problem definition to evidence-based recommendations.
- A threshold model: the Tiered Attendance Threshold, which replaces a single 10 percent cut point with developmental bands.
The work began with her doctoral research on school social bonding and grew through decades of scholarship and practice. She co-founded the International Network for School Attendance in 2018 and serves as its Vice President. She is a past president of the International Association for Truancy and Dropout Prevention. She edited the Unlearning Attendance research collection, with 14 articles from 46 authors, and led the Education Not Cancelled collection. Her scholarship carries more than 1,700 Google Scholar citations, and her two Frontiers research collections have drawn more than 310,000 views and downloads in more than 160 countries.
In 2025, she launched Attendance USA to carry the science into practice and policy. In 2026, Attendance USA certified its first national cohort of 75 Certified Attendance Professionals™, opened university partnerships, and published Schools Spared Children Punished: Outsourced Education | How we got to Attendance Science™.
Her work has moved the field from counting absence to understanding it, and from punishing children to supporting families. A social worker by training, she keeps one principle at the center: humans first.
“Attendance is the tally. Absenteeism is the reasons. Our job is to understand the reasons and build a place worth showing up for.”
Dr. Carolyn Gentle-Genitty, founder and CEO, Attendance USA
